On Sunday , May 21 , 2023 over 100 GLMS members and their families came together at the Kentucky Science Center to celebrate another great year of innovation and strategy within the organization . The room featured a scavenger hunt and fidget toys for kids ( and those young at heart ) to coincide with the ongoing mission of our venue to inspire creativity . After the ceremony , all guests were invited to explore the exhibits .
We thanked Dr . Brian Sosnin , outgoing Board Chair , and Dr . Valerie Briones-Pryor , outgoing President , for their leadership and welcomed in Dr . Patricia Purcell as she became the new GLMS President .
Also at the event , the GLMS Foundation made a generous $ 100,000 gift to support the new permanent exhibition at the Science Center , Uniquely Human , which will focus on the connection between mind and body , and the ways that experiences and attitudes influence behaviors .
During her presidential address , Dr . Purcell shared personal stories from her life of what it means to uplift and empower each other , and how we can all lead with purpose .
“ How can we return to that feeling that we will prevail and be successful ? Consider learning not just from achievements , but also from mistakes . Remember that we are often stronger than what we perceive . Use the best of what you have accomplished to build on your belief in yourself . You have the capabilities to determine a solution and can reach your goal .”
Over the next year , Dr . Purcell wants to focus on ways to celebrate our members for their achievements both inside and outside the clinic or hospital walls . She reminded us all that whatever hurdles might lie in our paths – albeit valid – can be overcome . She borrowed from a classic children ’ s book to summarize her plans for empowerment over the next year : let ’ s move from “ I think I can …” to “ I know I can !”
