Michael Hughes , MD , age 67 , died unexpectedly Wed ., Aug . 24 , 2022 . He was born Nov . 12 , 1954 , the son of the late Dr . Elmo K . and Mrs . Virginia Hughes .
He is survived by his wife , Dr . Donna Marlene Roberts , three sons , Dr . William Michael Hughes Jr . and wife Holly , Reverend Robert Christopher Hughes and Stephen Peyton Hughes , and three grandchildren . In addition to his parents , he was predeceased by brother Elmo Hughes Jr . and one grandson .
Dr . Hughes was a graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine class of 1981 and completed his family medicine residency at the UofL Department of Family Medicine . During the first month of training , he fell in “ love at first sight ” with a fellow resident , and they were married two years later . Upon completion of residency , Dr . Hughes followed in the footsteps of his father ,
maintaining his independent solo practice at 6503 Dixie Highway and providing inpatient care at Sts . Mary and Elizabeth Hospital . He felt it was very important to maintain the continuity of care for his patients and was in fact one of the last family physicians to admit and care for his own patients long after the hospitalist teams began . He was also proud to continue with paper charts throughout his 35 years of practice , never switching to electronic records . An abrupt decline in health forced Dr . Hughes to retire in 2019 and close the practice started by his father in 1952 , but he never stopped wishing he could return to work . Legacy patients who saw both generations of Hughes physicians still recall stories of the early days of the practice . Dr . Hughes was described as “ a simple man ” who never strayed far from the 5-mile radius around where he grew up , but he was proud to serve the PRP community as long as he could .
