FROM THE PRESIDENT by VALERIE F . BRIONES-PRYOR , MD , MHA , SFHM , FACP

Our Journey Thus Far

GLMS VISION : Create a collaborative community that unites physicians .
GLMS MISSION STATEMENT : GLMS empowers physicians by creating engaging experiences , advancing meaningful advocacy and building impactful relationships in the community .

Mabuhay ! It ’ s hard to believe that I am already in the 12th ( and last ) month of my GLMS Presidency . The time has truly gone by quickly , and though most say that “ Time flies when you ’ re having fun ,” I will say instead that I enjoyed my time and that it has been a very busy 12 months .

First , let me say thank you to all of you , who allowed me to share my insights and my stories with you as we started this journey together last year . When
I started my Presidency , I shared with you my hopes , dreams and plans for GLMS , which was mainly to position GLMS for the future , especially in this everchanging environment . Over this past year , I have shared stories about my life and how it has shaped the leader , the physician and the person I am today . This was very intentional , as it is important that you know your leader and that I earn your trust as we ventured on this journey towards value together .
Back in July , I shared with you the foundation and the “ why ” behind our journey , which is in the form of our updated Mission and Vision statement for GLMS . All journeys need a roadmap , which for us , came about through the GLMS Strategic Plan . Back in July , our roadmap was very aspirational and over the year , I admit , I had my concerns that maybe we were too aspirational . However , not every journey is easy , and many times , the difficult times lead to the best results . Therefore , I would like to thank our Executive Vice President / CEO Bert Guinn , the GLMS team , my fellow officers and the GLMS Board for moving the Strategic Plan forward and keeping us on task and on the path of our journey .
As with the implementation of most strategic plans , the first year is the most difficult , as it requires people to change , to trust the new process and to hold one another accountable . One year ago , GLMS was faced with the challenge of how to be of value to its members , to future members and to the community we serve so that GLMS is around for future generations of physicians . In planning for the future , we knew that value is subjective , and its meaning is different depending on the person . Therefore , we knew that we had to meet physicians where they were , regardless of their employment , practice or time in life . This past year , GLMS set a record for the number of events offered to its members , even exceeding the number of events offered prior to COVID-19 . The heart of GLMS is its members , and to create a collaborative community that unites us , means we need to bring us together whenever we can and in every way we can .
Though the Strategic Plan provided us with a map of our journey , it was important that we also have tools to keep us on the right path . Over these past few months , the GLMS team under Bert ’ s leadership , have developed Key Performance Indicators ( KPIs ) that will serve as our compass as well as gauge how we are progressing through our journey to value . These KPIs measure several important components of GLMS , including member engagement , financial stability , and service operations including our primary service of MedCentral ( Credentialing ). Though these KPIs are important , what is of utmost importance is that we periodically share updates with our members so that you , as a valuable member of GLMS can hold us , as leaders of GLMS , accountable in this journey to value .
Though my time as your guide is ending , my successors are just as qualified ( if not more qualified ) and dedicated to leading us on this journey towards value . There are so many exciting things on the horizon , and it has been my honor to be part of this journey with you thus far . I look forward to the future of GLMS and am confident that we have positioned GLMS in this new environment . Twelve months ago at the President ’ s Celebration , I sang to you about The Climb , and I sign off to you now as I concluded then : I look forward to taking this journey , this climb , with all of you . Thank you and Mabuhay !
* Mabuhay is a Filipino greeting meaning “ long life .”
