FROM the PRESIDENT
a marathon . Anyways , I share this because running has been my way to destress , to clear my head . I have always said that I get my best ideas when running . There ’ s something about having that time to myself , whether it ’ s pounding the pavement outside or on the treadmill . I also love doing marathons and half-marathons . I ’ ll always complain about the training , but in the end , I really do enjoy putting in the work and getting to that finish line . For anyone who has ever run a race they ’ ve trained for , the finish line is just the icing on the cake . It ’ s the work that comes before the finish line that matters most . I have come to truly appreciate that work . I ’ ve learned that without that discipline , without that commitment , then the race is really going to suck , and you ’ re going to hurt .
5 . I am an introvert at heart . Growing up , I was always the quiet one in class , observing everyone around me . Though I know a lot of people , I pretty much stick to only a few whom I really confide in . And usually , I ’ m running alone . Don ’ t get me wrong , I do like to meet people and be part of great conversations , but I ’ m usually happy standing in the back people watching . When I am standing and observing , I ’ m also listening , and I have found that observing and listening to all that ’ s going on around me , has been one of my biggest strengths as a physician and as a leader .
We want GLMS to be an integral part of the Louisville community , but GLMS is nothing without its members . In this current environment , we know that our physicians need more from GLMS , it needs to be of value . We want to really focus on the needs of our members and future members , but to do that , we need to get to know our members . You ’ ll see that reflected in the various themes in Louisville Medicine over the next 12 months , where we want to highlight all the wonderful things that our physicians are doing in Louisville and beyond . As I ’ ve shared with you , I am much more than my practice of medicine , and we have a lot of physicians in our community doing great things in addition to medicine that need to be shared and celebrated .
We ’ re about to embark on a difficult , but wonderful journey as we position GLMS for future . Much like marathon training , it will be tough , but it will be worth it . I look forward to taking this journey , with all of you .
* Mabuhay is a Filipino greeting meaning “ long life .”
Why are these things important for you to know ? Because that ’ s how I lead . I ’ m loyal , I ’ m faithful , I believe in the power of positive words , I ’ m committed to the work , and I ’ m an observer and listener .
My spiritual mentor once talked about servant leadership and the qualities of servers . He talked about how the call to serve is much more than just one person . I have always felt that medicine was my calling , that I was given gifts to serve . Now , it is my turn to serve as your GLMS President .
Dr . Briones-Pryor is the Medical Director for the Hospital Medicine Service Line for UofL Health and is the Chief Medical Officer for UofL Health Shelbyville Hospital .
One of my top priorities over this next year is positioning GLMS for the future . To do this , we have embarked on a rigorous Strategic Planning process , one that hasn ’ t been done in several years . We are looking at how GLMS can be of value to all physicians in our community , regardless of employment , position or time in life . We want to serve all our physicians , whether it be the practicing physician , the administrative physician , the retired physician , the newly graduated resident , and especially , the medical student .
Soon we will share with you the current work for GLMS ’ s Strategic Plan . We have just started the groundwork , and the work ahead will continue through the presidents that follow me . We are asking ourselves the difficult questions and recognizing that what we ’ ve done in the past will not fit with what we need to be for the future . We ’ ll likely be asking you , our members , how can GLMS best serve you ?
