BOOK REVIEW
under no moral obligation to be where you think they should be . They are where they are .”
Dr . Gupta also explains the origin of the name . “ In ancient Hindu texts in Sanskrit , Indriyas are the medium through which our body perceives and interacts with the whole creation , the medium through which the Aatma ( Soul ) experiences the knowledge of the senses … with the Karma Indriyas the body performs tasks . Pani-tattva or “ the grasping hand ” is one of the Karma Indriyas - hence , The Grasping Hand . Sage Charaka defined the function of the hand as Grahana ( receive , gather , collect ) and Dharana ( hold ). Sage Saankhya defined the function of the hand as Aharana ( receive ) and Aadaana ( hold ). It is amazing how succinctly the function of the hand was defined in the ancient times ! The whole upper extremity is complicit in the function of grasp and manipulation by the hands . We have therefore included the whole upper extremity
in The Grasping Hand .
Organized into 38 chapters , the authors take us through local and regional anatomy of the upper limb , each way station generously illustrated with spectacularly crafted photographs of still more spectacular dissections . The authors include six members of Louisville Arm and Hand , joined by a host of national and international experts spanning the globe from Australia to Africa to Asia to Europe and beyond .
I could go on ad infinitum , but I will stop here . Investigate for yourself ! This volume is recommended to any and all with an interest in the hand , or with anatomy as whole , carrying on the fine functional anatomic traditions laid out by Allen Kanavel in 1912 .
Dr . Tate is a hand surgeon with Norton Louisville Arm & Hand .
