IN REMEMBRANCE : JOSEPH C . BABEY , III , MD SEPT . 11 , 1940 - APRIL 30 , 2021
Dr . Joseph C . Babey III was born in Cincinnati , Ohio , raised in Louisville and graduated in 1958 from Trinity High School and in 1962 from Xavier University . After graduation from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1966 , Dr . Babey began his internship and pediatric residency at the St . Joseph ’ s Infirmary in Louisville . He was board certified in pediatrics and practiced in Louisville .
Dr . Babey is survived by his wife Sheri , his three sons , two stepsons , 13 grandchildren , two great grandchildren , two sisters and the mother of his children , Sandra Babey . His daughter Bridget Babey Johnson preceded him in death .
From 1967 to 1969 , Dr . Babey was the Senior Medical Officer on the USS Destroyer Laffey DD724 .
He was associated for 55 years with Louisville Pediatric Specialists and with the University of Louisville Department of Pediatrics . He was recognized by his peers as one of the top 10 doctors in Louisville .
Dr . Babey retired after 55 years of practice . During his career , Dr . Babey was recognized for his outstanding contribution to pediatrics by the Caritas Medical Center and Audubon Hospital .
Throughout his career , Dr . Babey received many awards and was recognized by the Trinity High School Hall of Fame . He received the Catholic Schools Distinguished Alumni Award . Dr . Babey also received the Humanitarian Award from the National Hydrocephalic Foundation . He spent countless hours caring for the indigent and for children born with handicaps . He and his wife Sheri helped staff the medical clinic at Boys and Girls Haven in Louisville .
When he moved to Estero , Florida , Dr . Babey volunteered at the indigent clinic and helped with the Florida Disabled Olympians . At the age of 74 , Florida State University asked him to help mentor the pediatric portion of their Family Practice Residency .
His hobbies were nature and the outdoors , and maybe a little golf .
Dr . Babey was noted for his exceptional care and love of his patients and their families . Once seen by Dr . Babey , his patients never left him . He is described as always available , thorough , kind and caring . His patients described him as “ truly the best .”
Dr . Babey died on April 30 , 2021 , at the age of 80 . He was a good doctor and a good man . Dr . Babey has been greatly missed .
