IN REMEMBRANCE : HOMER A . HOLT JR ., MD 7 / 6 / 38-12 / 2 / 21

Homer A . Holt Jr ., MD , died peacefully at home in Louisville on Dec . 2 , 2021 at the age of 83 after a long illness .

He was born on July 6 , 1938 in Ashland , Kentucky and was the oldest of six children . He grew up on the other side of the state in Hopkinsville or “ Hoptown ” as he liked to call it . After high school , he attended Vanderbilt University where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and played on the golf team . He was a loyal alumnus of Vanderbilt University and in later years would always perk up upon hearing its name mentioned . He later shared some of that loyalty with the University of Alabama when his son Homer III and daughter Kim attended the home of the Crimson Tide !
After graduation from Vanderbilt University , he attended the University of Louisville School of Medicine . While in medical school , he married Ginny Cayce on Thanksgiving Day in 1962 and they enjoyed 59 years of marriage . After graduation from medical school , he did his general surgery training at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin , Texas , under the Berry Plan . Homer and Ginny returned to Louisville to raise their three children , Kathy , Kim and Homer III .
Homer specialized in urology and completed his residency at the University of Louisville . He entered practice with doctors Lich , Maurer , Howerton and Amin . He was a quiet person but was loved and respected by both office staff , hospital nurses and especially his patients . He contributed to the training and mentoring of the urology residents at the University of Louisville .
He practiced mostly at the “ downtown ” hospitals , although he moved to the VA Hospital to join his former partner Dr . Amin toward the end of his career . After retirement , he volunteered at The Healing Place .
Outside medicine , he enjoyed himself on horseback or a tractor on the farm in Shelby County . He was a member of the Long Run Hounds in Simpsonville . He loved both fox hunting and beagling . One of the highlights of his fox hunting career was a trip to Ireland where he and his friends hunted with several of the well-known hunts in the southwestern part of the country . My family and I enjoyed many a Sunday beagling with him - myself for the exercise , my sons for the tailgating !
Homer enjoyed the Monday morning coffee and donut group with his former colleagues . Before his health declined , he and Ginny could cherish eight beautiful grandchildren who ranged in age from 36 to 13 years of age .
He was cared for at home by Ginny and their children with the assistance of caregivers , especially Garry Smalley and several Hosparus nurses .
His funeral took place with military honors at Christ Church United Methodist in Louisville . - James I . Harty , MD
