IN REMEMBRANCE : GLENN E . LAMBERT , JR ., MD 11 / 23 / 45-5 / 26 / 21

On May 26 , 2021 , Dr . Glenn E . Lambert , Jr ., beloved husband , loving father and dedicated physician , passed away at age 75 . Glenn was born in Pensacola , Florida on Nov . 23 , 1945 , to Frances and Captain Glenn E . Lambert , Sr . As a Navy child , Glenn Jr . lived across the U . S . Dr . Lambert graduated from Duke University , and he graduated with highest honors from Tulane University School of Medicine . Dr . Lambert completed his general surgery residency at Bellevue Hospital / New York University and the University of Louisville Department of Surgery under Dr . Hiram C . Polk , Jr .

Mentored by Dr . Jesse E . Thompson , one of the founders of vascular surgery , Dr . Lambert completed his vascular surgery fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas , Texas . For two years , Dr . Lambert served his country as a general surgeon in the Air Force . He then moved to Louisville and practiced as a general surgeon and as a vascular surgeon for over 40 years . Dr . Glenn E . Lambert , Jr . was the first board-certified vascular surgeon in Kentucky and one of the first in the U . S .
Dr . Lambert helped advocate for and teach vascular surgery in the specialty ’ s burgeoning years . He established the first accredited vascular non-invasive lab in Kentucky . Glenn continued throughout his practice to embody the principles of collegiality , compassion and honesty . As a newly trained vascular surgeon , I was able to see Glenn ’ s dedication throughout the years and to seek his guidance through difficult clinical decisions . I remember when he was called emergently to help another physician with intraoperative bleeding . He calmly entered the room , assessed the situation and proceeded to repair the iliac artery and vein . While he got control of the situation , he reassured the physician with comfort that things would be alright . Till this day , this physician retells how grateful they were for his presence and grace .
There are several colleagues within Louisville and throughout the country who have had the honor of working with him , being trained by him and learning from him . As a reflection upon my time with Glenn , I believe one of the greatest legacies anyone can pass on is the core principle of being an excellent physician-surgeon and human . Glenn certainly kept that legacy alive and well . Glenn ’ s colleagues considered him a true gentleman , a scholar and above all , a dedicated physician-surgeon . Glenn ’ s presence will be missed but his legacy will never be forgotten .
Glenn had three passions in his life : Duke University , vascular surgery and his family . He is survived by his wife of 39 years , Carol , his daughter , Madeleine , his granddaughter , Frances , and his sister , Susan . - Greg Schmieder , MD
