( continued from page 33 ) to find his new career .
“ There was an interview in Louisville , Kentucky , which I had never even heard of , other than the Kentucky Derby ,” he said . “ My brother had moved to Bowling Green as an internist , so I came and visited him at the same time .”
Dr . Seyal met with Dr . J . William Comer , a cardiologist at St . Mary and Elizabeth Hospital and was ultimately offered a job . He fell in love with the new-to-him city and promptly accepted . He began doing cardiac caths at Jewish , UofL and Audubon hospitals , as they were only available at a few area locations at the time .
A couple of years into his new specialty , Dr . Mohammad Hussein called out of the blue and told Dr . Seyal to “ keep his options open .” Dr . Hussein , a Pakistani graduate of Dow Medical College , was known by Dr . Seyal as a “ very kind , compassionate and highly respected cardiologist in town .” He had completed his cardiology fellowship at UofL and had a very busy practice in Southern Indiana . In 1985 , Dr . Seyal started working across the river , but still also brought patients to Louisville for some procedures . As Jewish Hospital expanded at this time , cardiology as a specialty bloomed .
Always looking for a new skill , Dr . Seyal learned angioplasty under Dr . Ron Masden ( there was no fellowship yet for this , it was all learned on the job ). He attended conferences around the country with one notably led by Dr . Andreus Gruentzig from Emory , the pioneer of coronary angioplasty . Following angioplasty came coronary stenting in the early 90s , also learned on the job . Interventional cardiology soon came on the scene and Dr . Seyal was grandfathered in after completing 500 cases . Just in case that wasn ’ t enough , he also went on to be certified in lipidology , hypertension and nuclear cardiology - bringing his total board certifications to seven : internal medicine , cardiovascular disease , interventional cardiology , lipidology , hypertension and nuclear cardiology . He also passed the Canadian certification board of internal medicine , earning the designation of FRCPC ( Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians ).
In 1991 , Dr . Marty Denny joined their practice , and they were busier than ever , even hiring the first cardiology nurse practitioner in Southern Indiana .
“ We started new initiatives and medical research . We had cardiac rehab , I established enhanced external counter pulsation ( EECP ) in the office to help patients with angina and we opened a lipid clinic and a nuclear cardiology initiative right in the office .”
Dr . Hussein eventually retired , and the landscape of health care was changing as private practices were being bought by hospital systems . In 2019 , Dr . Seyal opened his own practice , Seyal Cardiology , in Clarksville , Indiana .
