IN REMEMBRANCE : BOBBY MILLER DEWEESE , MD 11 / 8 / 1934-11 / 25 / 2020
Bobby Miller DeWeese was born November 8 , 1934 in LaCenter , Kentucky in Ballard County . His parents were Mildred Miller and Gilbert DeWeese . His initial introduction to medicine and politics was as a youth carrying the bag for his step-father Dr . William Coffee , a veterinarian . It was during this period Bob was introduced to Alben Barkley and convinced him to be the baccalaureate speaker for his high school graduation . This power of persuasion persisted throughout his entire life . He entered the University of Kentucky as a freshman pre-med student in 1953 . The next year he met a Louisville girl , Angela Haick . They were married in 1958 and she remained at his side for the remainder of his life . Following his graduation from the University of Louisville School of Medicine and training in general surgery , he began a distinguished 30-year private practice in general surgery .
Bob was highly respected by colleagues , patients and anyone he encountered . Over the years he held many leadership positions in medicine . He was elected President of the Jefferson County Medical Society , President of the Kentucky Medical Association , Delegate to KMA , Delegate to the American Medical Association and many other organizations .
Following his 30-year practice of surgery , Bob entered politics and in 1992 he was elected to represent the 48 th district in the Kentucky House of Representatives ; he held this position for 24 years .
Ironically even though his first taste of politics was with a Democrat , he was elected as a Republican . During this time , he worked tirelessly for the 48 th and the state as whole . He did not consider the political affiliation of any constituent and always responded to their questions and requests .
Most importantly above all Bob loved his family . He was a role model and standard for them and anyone he encountered . -Tom Reichard , MD
