THIS SPORTING LIFE AUTHOR Kathryn Vance

On Tuesday , April 13 , the CATO Senior group ’ s Derby Prep discussion starred Mr . Billy Reed , longtime sports columnist , author and racing writer . Dr . Charles Oberst introduced Mr . Reed , a familiar face and voice to Kentuckians from local TV , the Courier Journal , the Lexington Herald and Sports Illustrated . Mr . Reed is a Kentucky native and a Transylvania University grad with thousands of columns , appearances and now 53 Derbies under his belt . Dr . Oberst gave high praise to his 18 th and most recent book , “ Last of A BReed .”

In the virtual meeting , Dr . Oberst moderated the conversation with Mr . Reed where he told stories and talked about relationships with several familiar notables such as Sen . Mitch Mc- Connell , former IU basketball coach Bobby Knight , and former UK baseball , basketball player and AD , Mr . C . M . Newton .
After coming home to the Courier Journal from Sports Illustrated in 1972 , Mr . Reed with Mr . Jim Bolus launched an investigation and wrote stories about fixed races in the horse racing industry . The following year , he received the Sigma Delta Chi National Award for General Reporting , beating out the famous writing duo of Woodward and Bernstein .
