INTRODUCING DR . MARK O . MUGAVIN
The Kumar Eye Institute is a private , multispecialty , Ophthalmology group with three operating locations in the Greater Louisville area . It is our honor to introduce the newest physician of the Kumar Eye Institute family , Dr . Mark O . Mugavin .
A Louisville native and Board-Certified Ophthalmologist , Dr . Mugavin joined Kumar Eye Institute in 2020 . He has a particular interest and additional medical training in the Cornea , having worked with Price Vision Group in Indianapolis for a year as a route for gaining exposure to the latest technology . He brings to our practice a new skillset including a new cutting-edge treatment for managing refractory dry eye and modern techniques for optimizing laser vision correction .
He attended the University of Dayton for his Undergraduate Degree before obtaining both a Medical Degree and Masters in Public Health at the University of Louisville . He then went on to complete residency with the University of Louisville Department of Ophthalmology . During residency , he became the first resident in the history of the program to become certified on the VISX Star S4 IR Excimer Laser utilized for modern LASIK surgery . He also has published multiple articles in the medical literature in the fields of Retina and Neuro- Ophthalmology . He was named the 2017 Kentucky Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons Advocate of the Year . An enthusiast for Ophthalmology Education , while in residency he helped create the online curriculum “ Ophtho 101 ” still actively used to teach the fundamentals of Ophthalmology to 2 nd year medical students at the University of Louisville .
He brings to our practice a variety of new treatment modalities including the use of Intense Pulse Light Therapy for refractory dry eye and Meibomian gland dysfunction
Dr . Mugavin prides himself in being a down to earth physician who will listen to patients and breakdown complex medical issues in a way that empowers them to have an active influence on their care . In his free time away from the office , he loves spending time with his wife Brooke and two young children Ben and Charlotte . His hobbies include reading , fishing , horse racing , and physical fitness .
