And , their commitment and attitude - one of gracious joy . They were keenly aware that without them , there would be nothing , save the whims of a natural process and result . They were bolstered by knowing that they were honoring God ’ s request to “... do unto the least of these ...”
If for no other reason than interesting world and Kentucky history , you should read “ Wide Neighborhoods .” You will encounter and enjoy some familiar points of contact . Mary Breckinridge is a name-dropper — not to impress you , but to give credit and thanks for significant support and contributions . You ’ ll find some folks from Louisville ; names like Norton , Belknap and Ballard , and innumerable friends from farther away like Alben Barkley and some people named Brandeis , Ford and Edison .
FNS was , for much of the twentieth century , the only place in the US where nurse midwives could practice legally . That field has opened up and gained acceptance largely because of the work and success of FNS and their development of a school of midwifery . My copy of this book was a gift to me by a current student of that school , Anna , the daughter of longtime , great friends . This gift has even more special meaning because Anna was best friends with our daughter throughout grade , middle and high school . I started the book in honor of her and her gift to me . An additional delight is that Anna and I can now relate on a professional level , albeit from different viewpoints . She is just beginning her career as I am finishing mine .
Another special point of reference is that my mother knew Mary Breckinridge and once took me to Hyden for a visit . I was too young at the time to now recall much from that meeting or understand the impact Mary Breckinridge had . But , the significance that my Mom placed on FNS has forever stood out in my memory .
So , if the practice of medicine occasionally seems tough , laborious and unfriendly with too much stress and strain ; if you ’ re ever threatened with “ burnout ,” put another log on the fire . Snuggle up with this book and a comfortable blanket , maybe even some of that Kentucky Vitamin EtOH , and allow yourself to wander back to a time and place that will both inspire and humble you . You will be impressed by those brave , devoted , courageous women . You may find yourself giving thanks for the time and place and manner in which you are now able to practice your art . And you might be better able to tolerate , overlook some of today ’ s discomforts , rejoicing at the opportunity to serve your fellow man / woman . Dr . Baker is a retired OB-GYN who practiced in downtown Louisville for four decades .
