INTRODUCING MONALISA TAILOR, MD, GLMS PRESIDENT DIANNA WOLF FRIEND SINCE MIDDLE SCHOOL When I first met Mona, she was a young eighth-grader on my school bus who knew my cousin from elementary school. I don’t remember anything we talked about, but we became fast friends! We became even closer in high school, sharing tales in the hallways and classes. We did Speech club, Beta club and high school musicals together. We spent many Fourth of July nights watching fireworks outside her house and talking for hours after everyone else had gone home. Since our first introduction, we haven’t found a moment to stop talking, except when we were spoken to, and then we’d pass notes in class. When college arrived, Mona was hours away, but we spoke often through AOL Instant Messenger and long phone calls. I’m not one to talk on the phone a lot, but when it’s Mona, it would be hours. We talked about our lives, our dreams, the good, the bad, the ugly. There have been few months in the last two decades that we haven’t caught up on life. Mona began calling on her way home at a specific mile marker on I-65 South, and when I saw her name flash on my phone, I’d say, “Mona’s on her way home!” We now call it Our Spot. And she’d almost always conclude with saying two colors. The first time, I didn’t know what she meant, but later figured out it’s the colors of the two spotlighted Corvettes outside the Assembly Plant. Sometimes I’ll call her from Our Spot when I’m headed to Bowling Green, even though she isn’t in town, and I’ll always tell her the two colors. As Mona headed to medical school, I was so proud, and I continue to be so proud of her today! I remember sitting at her graduation filled with pride and excitement at what she had accomplished, but also what was to come next. She has a heart for helping others, and I know that’s something that she’ll continue for life. It’s funny how someone you met on a school bus could end up being a lifelong friend: I cannot imagine my life without her. She’s one of the best people I know, and I’m so glad I can call her friend.
