be dealing with difficult situations, sick patients and our patient’s
stress and anxiety of dealing with this illness. On some days this
will be easy, on other days, it will be difficult. On some days our
own anxieties and uncertainties will creep up on us. In these times
it is okay to disconnect, destress and take time for ourselves. Remember
the simple things, make sure you are sleeping, eating,
getting adequate exercise and staying in touch with your family and
friends. Remember your colleagues are your confidantes to share
your concerns. As your medical society, I hope we can offer more
programming to empower your self-care in our year ahead so you
can empower your patients.
Agent Carter from Avengers said: “The world has changed. None
of us can go back. All we can do is our best.”
I hope our year together helps us adjust to this new normal in the
age of COVID-19, helps us be a better collective voice for medicine
and helps us empower ourselves so we can empower our patients.
In this time of trial and tribulation, there are a lot of unknowns as
we battle this virus. I’m here to remind you, that each and every
one of you is a hero. On those days when we suffer from our own
self-doubt, from our own stress, from our own uncertainty, especially
when it comes to COVID-19, remember who you are and
tell yourself, you are a hero…and I can do this all day! We are all
in this together, we are gonna get through this. We will all do our
best. So physicians, assemble.

PRESIDENTS’ INSTALLATION 2020
With our community so constricted by the pandemic, our
GLMS Presidents’ Installation looked very different
this year. Unable to celebrate in person with family and
friends, we still wanted to keep some of the tradition
alive. This year, we saluted the passing of the gavel with
a virtual ceremony held at GLMS headquarters, with
only necessary staff and the outgoing and incoming
Presidents. If conditions permit, we plan to host a ceremony in the
fall to celebrate a successful year and look forward to how we can
meet our upcoming goals.
Dr. Burns kicked things off by announcing the winners of the
2020 Richard Spear, MD, Memorial Essay Contest. In the Practicing
and Life Physicians category, Dr. David Dageforde won with
his photo essay titled “Empowering Physicians to Inspire.” In the
Student and In-Training Physician Category, first-year resident
Dr. Joseph Snider won with his photo essay titled “Main Street.”
These photo essays will be published next month in the July issue
of Louisville Medicine.
Dr. Burns then highlighted some of the many accomplishments
within the society over the last year including the launch of the
Med30 credentialing program, an increase in active memberships
and the passing of 13 GLMS resolutions at the Kentucky Medical
Association (KMA) Annual Meeting. (More details on these and
other achievements from the last year can be found in the 2020
GLMS Annual Report, in the May issue of Louisville Medicine or
online at glms.org/annualreport).
Dr. Burns then formally introduced Dr. Monalisa Tailor as
