PHYSICIANS ON THE FRONT LINE
The USS Nassau LHA-4, an amphibious assault ship, in Norwegian fjord during 1988 NATO exercise. It was capable of transporting 1,900 Marines in
addition to Navy personnel. The cargo hold contained amphibious landing vessels, tanks, artillery and other similar materials. The abbreviated flight
deck can support six Harrier vertical takeoff/landing jets for ground support and an assortment of attack (Cobra) and support helicopters for ground
support, casualty and supply transport. After Marines are launched from the stern in landing boats, the ship is converted into a 300 bed hospital with
four surgical and three dental operating rooms.

by wood burning stoves. The location is a campground near the
town of Harstad, 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle. - NATO
