Jamie conducted dermatology and clinical immunology research for two years before moving into a residency there. Meredith joined the staff as an attending physician in late 2004. “When I joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins, they didn’t have a pediatrics-gynecology program. So, I started one under the mentor- ship of Dr. Geoffrey Cundiff,” Meredith recalled. “I’ll never forget, we were in the OR for this complicated reconstructive case and he said, ‘I need to make a few phone calls.’ He scrubbed out, and he did it because he knew I was fine on my own. It was that transition from having a mentor to being one myself.” Although Jamie and Meredith were both nearing where they wanted to be career-wise, they weren’t in love with Baltimore. They looked around and lined up jobs in Louisville, Ky. The whole family came to the city in 2009. “We spent a week here when we interviewed, and I think it re- minded Jamie of growing up in Tallahassee,” Meredith said. “After that, he was sold on the city.” Jamie found his practice right away. He became a partner and never looked back. “There’s a lot of camaraderie in our practice,” he said. “If I have a question, I can go down the hall and ask one of my colleagues, who are pretty much my mentors. There’s always something new and I love the environment.” When she arrived, Meredith linked up with Dr. Paige Hert- weck, who was the very first fellow in pediatric gynecology here in Louisville. “Paige and I stayed at UofL for a while. Then we moved the practice to Norton Children’s Gynecology.” She remained with Norton Children’s Gynecology for seven years before pursing her current opportunity. Now, Meredith writes medical policy for numerous specialties 40 LOUISVILLE MEDICINE across Kentucky and Ohio. “My career path gave me a kind of unique skill set. I worked on practice bulletins with ACOG. I worked on policy for the American Academy of Pediatrics Adolescent Health Committee. I knew about policy and writing. What I didn’t know as much about was Medicare, but I’m learning quickly.” Happy for his wife’s success, Jamie couldn’t help but joke, “The only downside is that we have this big long desk at home. I made the nicest part, with the computer and printer and all that for me. But when Meredith got the job, the office became hers, and I’m scooted to the side.” The Loveless’ have become adept at striking a balance between work and home. Their daughter, Alexis, is on a competitive dance team. Clay is a piano major in the Youth Performing Arts School at duPont Manual High School. He’s composed multiple pieces and gives lessons in his spare time. Colin is on the powerlifting team at Trinity High School and loves chemistry. Both boys are getting close to the rank of Eagle Scout, and Jamie, an Assistant Scout Master, joins them on camping trips a few times each year. “People ask us about the stress of having two doctors in the family,” Jamie said. “But we’ve always made it work and tried to make time for each other. Our career paths were challenging, but we maintained that time together.” “When you’re a physician, if you aren’t careful, you can make that everything,” Meredith added. “Striking a balance really is possible! The reality is that there will always be work to do. You have to find a way to make sure you aren’t missing those important life moments while you’re doing it.” Aaron Burch is the communications specialist for the Greater Louisville Medical Society.
