residency program (and a pathology student fellow program),
where his son cultivated an interest in pathology as well. In Kansas
City, Joe also gained a daughter-in-law (whom he came to love as
a daughter), Dr. Lynn Parker, when she married his son in 1992.
It turns out 1992 was a big year for the Parker family, because
Joe decided to make one final move to accept a chair position at the
University of Louisville that same year. Joe held the chair position
until he stepped down in 2001, at which time he took over as Director
of the Residency Program as well as the Autopsy Service until his
retirement in 2014. During his time at the University of Louisville,
Joe became a grandfather to his two granddaughters, Taylor Parker
(age 17) and Riley Cooper (age 13). He was an extremely proud
grandfather, with a passion for education for his family as well.
Over the course of his more than 50 year medical career, Joe
has mentored and enhanced the medical education of hundreds of
pathology residents, neurology residents, neurosurgery residents,
and thousands of medical students. He has co-authored over 130
journal articles, 95 abstracts, and 10 book chapters. Joe always
enjoyed military and civil war history, philosophy and physical
fitness activities. His knowledge and wisdom will live on in all of
the students, residents and fellows he mentored, as well as within
the family he loved.
