“[A goal is to] finish raising my children. My youngest is in high
school. If I can get my children out and on their own and established,
that would accomplish a major life goal right there.”
In addition to family time, Dr. Smalley also volunteers in the
community in a variety of ways, often lending his time in conjunc-
tion with his practice. “I am a team physician for Southern High
School, primarily football,” he said. “That’s something I do with our
practice, something they’ve been doing for maybe 40 years now to
be a part of the community.”
After years in a practice that sees so many cases every day, Dr.
Smalley says it is the patient relationship and the diagnostic puzzles
that really keep him excited to come to work every day. “There’s
a lot of intellectual stimulation and there’s always a new problem,
something you have to figure out. It’s almost like a puzzle some-
times, putting together all the pieces. It’s certainly satisfying when
you do that in a way that makes a difference in someone’s life. I
think the best part is probably that people are really appreciative
of what we do. So, when people express that and tell me that I did
something that really made a big impact on their life, that really
keeps you going.”
