WEAR THE WHITE COAT Ylonda Davis, Leadership Louisville Finance and Administration Director, Shadowed Dr. Jonathan Weeks, Maternal and Fetal Medicine "I really enjoyed my experience with Dr. Weeks. Not only does he deal with your standard high risk pregnancies but he has a passion for helping mothers who deal with addiction. He taught me a whole lot about the effects of addiction on the brain and nerves. He’s working to give a better life to mothers and babies who don’t have a voice, and I really appreciate that I got to see him in action." Senator Paul Hornback Shadowed Ophthalmologist Dr. Frank Burns, MD, PLC "Dr. Burns, his patients love him, his bedside manner, his follow-up. We did 11 surgeries in under four hours. The patients were scheduled to come in the next day, but he took time to call them all that night to make sure they were doing well. I admire someone who cares for patients that much, that was most impressive to me. Thank you to GLMS for giving us this opportunity. Often times we take for granted what goes on out there in the world and what these doctors do." Stephanie Renner, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Limestone Bank: Shadowed Dr. Alexandra Maki, Norton Surgical Specialists – Louisville Audubon "I watched her talk to patients of many different socioeconomic backgrounds. She spoke in terms they understood and with complete respect. It was great to see the humanity, and to see these patients treated with compassion and care." Allison Brown, Partner at Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs, LLP Shadowed Dr. Amy Quillo, UofL Physicians OutPatient Center - Surgery "It was a real pleasure to spend a morning in a place where compassion and empathy are really on the forefront. It was thrilling to watch Dr. Quillo talk with people, meet them on their level, and treat them with dignity and compassion. Getting to watch a surgery was a real privilege for me. I stood there with my eyes wide the whole time. She’s not just a great surgeon but also an excellent teacher. I want to thank her for her hospitality and generosity, and GLMS for hosting this amazing program." Louisville Metro Council President David James Shadowed Dr. John Roberts, UofL Physicians – Pediatric Neonatal "I didn’t get to witness Dr. Roberts talk to the patients very much, because they were all going goo goo ga ga. To understand why those babies were there, because of the opiate issue, was a crushing thing to me. I deal with it as a council person, but I don’t deal with little tiny babies who can’t understand what put them there: it was a very emotional time for me. The compassion that the nurses and doctors have towards those itty bitty babies is un- believable. They want so badly for good things to happen in their lives. We have to find more ways to help them and understand the process. What happens to that baby when it leaves the hospital, and you can’t bring it to any family members because they’re all in the same situation? What can we do to make the community understand that this affects each and every one of us? I take my hat off to people like Dr. Roberts for the work they do. I have to say thank you, because it’s not always a thankful job. I’m thankful for this opportunity because I learned so very much." JANUARY 2019 15
