T FOUNDATION he subsided away long enough for the 8 annual GLMS Foundation Scholarship Golf Scramble to be a resound- ing success once again. This year’s date, pushed back to October 15 after a massive storm rolled through in September, was a little chillier than normal but none the worse for wear. th Eighteen teams of physicians and sponsors played a scram- ble style tournament to benefit medical students, and six phy- sicians-in-the-making were awarded $5,000 scholarships as a celebration of their hard work, to help them grasp the opportunities before them. This year, $25,000 in scholarships were awarded to five prom- ising young medical students through the GLMS Foundation and another student was awarded a $5,000 scholarship by the GLMS Alliance. The total amount awarded over eight years has now risen to $203,000. Thank you to the physicians, health care organizations and local businesses that have made these scholarships possible. The 2018 medical student scholars were Erika Chandler, Joseph Colosimo II, Allie Eberly, Andrew Kelleher, Robert Pugh and Sarah England. Presenting the awards was GLMS Foundation Scholarship Committee Chair Linda Gleis, MD, with introductions from Golf Event Chair Dr. David Watkins and Robert Hecht. The $5,000 Alliance Scholarship was presented by Alliance President Debi McDonald. The all-tourney sponsor was Stock Yards Bank & Trust. “Medical students are the pipeline of the future. It’s a passion of mine to keep that pipeline open for dedicated and qualified people to practice medicine,” said Dr. Watkins. In the golf outing, teams followed the scramble format for the competition, in which all team members tee off and then play out the hole at stroke play from the location of the best-placed ball. The championship team was sponsored by Clarkson Insurance and included Brad Ruch, Mike Kaelin, Marty Walthers and David Clarkson. Second place went to the Stock Yards Bank team of Bart Brown, Chris Ochsner, Patrick Schmidt and Robert Hecht. The third place team was sponsored by Stock Yards Bank as well and included David Boland, Luke Hancock, Rick Tobe and Tony Simms. The annual “Worst Putter Award” – sponsored by Mary G. Barry, MD, in memory of her father, journalist Mike Barry – was awarded to David Lacey. The 9 th annual golf scramble will take place Monday, September 30 th , 2019. Be on the lookout for more information for next year’s event in the months ahead! Aaron Burch is the communications specialist for the Greater Louisville Medical Society. NOVEMBER 2018 27
