She joined the Shawnee Christian Healthcare Center to touch the lives of the underserved West End community. “For people who don’t have money for regular doctor visits, the trick is to meet them where they already are,” she said. Helping after Hurricane Katrina Halloween. Her daughter Lola is Doc McStuffins and Dr. Rondo is Hailey the Nurse. After several interviews, she joined Norton Community Medical Associates in Southern Indiana. She reunited with her Louisville family and built up her practice. Most happily, she gave birth to a baby girl, Lola, in 2010. “She’s the love of my life,” Dr. Rondo said with a smile. “When she was born, it really changed me. I began to allow my hospitalist colleagues to take care of my patients admitted to the hospital. I refused to have this child grow up and not know me. I want to be the best mom I can be. I want her to know me and me to know her.” Not only does Dr. Rondo have the light of her life in Lola, but she has three godchildren as well. Being close to home has allowed her to see all of these wonderful lives grow and change. “My father’s mother is turning 101 in May. Sharing my daughter with my grandmother has been amazing. They have a close and beautiful relationship,” she said emphatically. 40 LOUISVILLE MEDICINE Sundays in West Louisville. Dr. Rondo has been a part of health fairs at churches and community centers. I believe it can improve, and this center can be an oasis in the middle of a desert. It’s a constant struggle, and it can be exhausting, but its something I believe in.” Dr. Rondo is a longtime member of St. Stephen Baptist Church, a cook, a traveler, and an internal medicine physician, but most importantly, she is her daughter’s biggest fan. “Just recently, Lola was asking me why I became a doctor,” she said. “I told her I wanted to inspire her not to be afraid of a challenge. ‘Don’t be afraid of something that’s difficult, because sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone to get what you want in life.’” Aaron Burch is Communications Specialist for GLMS.
