It is heartbreaking to witness the joyous moment of a new life being adversely affected permanently. Instead of celebrating and cherishing the arrival of a precious life to this world, we had to treat this addicted newborn for opiate withdrawal. I had to transfer the infant to a neonatal intensive care unit where he would be treated for days, or in some instances for months, before he is well enough to be discharged back to his mother or to a foster home. What makes my head fume is the reactive medicine that we are practicing. In my limited research I have found that the cost of NICU care for infants with neonatal withdrawal syndrome is on average many thousands of dollars. We would save many lives if a fraction of this money was spent on youth programs and drug prevention. Heroin addiction is an epidemic and the numbers of babies born to addicted women continually rise.  C M Y CM MY CY It is my pleasure to recommend the financial services of Harding, Shymanski & Company… Harding, Shymanski & Company has always provided us with a quality product on a timely basis. My third patient was a three-year- old, extremely hyper boy running around the exam room and being constantly scolded by his frustrated mother. She was desperately seeking help to manage her out of control child. This young boy was one of the NICU graduates who had to continue treatment in the outpatient follow up methadone clinic. Many more dollars would be necessary for psychiatric evaluation and long term mental health medications and counseling.  Throughout the day however, I had to remember that the key to the pursuit of happiness is our decision to be happy. It means in times of hardship, we have the power of choice to change our stories and decide to see the positives. The rest of the day reminded me about the real reasons that I had chosen pediatrics. What I’m crazy about is the two-year old’s rosy cheeks, and the five-month-old’s untamed spiky hair. What brightens my day is the joy of laughing at silly nonsense knock knock jokes of the six-year-olds, and the groovy dance of a three-year-old in sync with the Gummy Bear Song. I am crazy about the pure-minded children full of life and potential. What makes me wake up happy and eager to work are the bright-eyed five-year-olds who can’t wait to happily present their perfectly colored little mermaid pictures to their doctor.  I am blessed to have the privilege of caring for our fragile future generation. I am proud to be part of a hopeful and talented team that tries our best to provide bright futures. I am dreaming for a day that most of our health care dollars will be directed toward preventive programs proactively.  Dr. Rezaei is a practicing pediatrician with Baptist Floyd Medical Group in New Albany, Ind. 22 LOUISVILLE MEDICINE Contact Michele R.
