DR. ALICE N. PICKETT( 1878-1971) Alice Pickett was the first woman U of L faculty member and one of the most beloved physicians of the early 20 th century, cherished by patients, students and peers( Fig. 5). A pioneer obstetrician, she became U of L’ s Chief of Obstetrics, a position she served in over 25 years until her retirement in 1952. She established state-wide clinics for prenatal care and birth control, and she wrote

extensively of medical advances. A colleague proclaimed,“ Her patients displayed toward her an affection and depth of feeling I have never seen associated with any other doctor.” She stands out as a role model to all for combining skill with compassionate care.
CONTEMPORARY WOMAN PHYSICIAN LEADERS
Carrying the legacy of the female physicians cited above, contemporaries continue outstanding medical contributions. Dr. Toni Ganzel is the first woman physician to serve as U of L Medical School Dean, and is a fine role model for students, while guiding the school through turbulent times. Dr. Nancy Swikert of Northern Kentucky is current President of the Kentucky Medical Association following much KMA leadership service. She follows Dr. Ardis Hoven of Lexington, who was the first woman KMA President( 1993). Dr. Hoven subsequently became the first Kentucky woman to serve as
President of the American Medical Association( 2013-14), and is now the first woman chair of the World Medical Association. She skillfully guided the AMA’ s advocacy of health care for all citizens at a critical time in the early 21 st century. Dr. Linda Gleis was the first woman physician GLMS President and KMA Secretary( 1999- 2001), and she continues to serve as KMA Treasurer and Member of its Board of Trustees and Foundation Board. Dr. Mary Barry combines a busy Internal Medicine practice with Editorship of Louisville Medicine, where she has established her role as conscience for our medical community. Dr. Joann Schulte directs the Metro Louisville Public Health Department, and continues the solid contributions of previous Director, Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, in public health service to our community.
Like the outstanding woman physicians who preceded them, all these women represent of the many more who contribute to the excellence of American medicine. A celebration of these contributions and a commitment to greater fairness for women and others historically underrepresented is most deserved.
Dr. Tobin is a professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He practices with UofL Physicians-Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
As young professionals we were looking for a firm we could build a great working partnership with and found it at Harding, Shymanski. They have helped us in everything from personal accounting, to transitioning and buying our practice, and now taking care of our business accounting and questions. We really love working with Harding, Shymanski.
