DECOMMISSIONING A NO- BLE MEDICAL MONUMENT

Like a great ship that served long and heroically in many epic battles , Louisville ’ s Old Medical School deserves a fitting decommissioning ceremony before it enters a new phase of service . On December 13 , we held such an event with a review of the building ’ s history , and a walk-through tour of the facility in which the memorable activities , people and events of the building ’ s history were reviewed .
Sequentially discussed were the Louisville Medical College era ( 1869-1908 ), the design and construction of the building ( 1891-1894 ), the University of Louisville era ( 1909-1970 ), the decade of abandonment and peril , and the rescue and restoration by the Medical Society . Especially interesting were the highlights remembered by the physicians who were educated there , which came forth as we visited memorable sites within those walls . The rescue effort was well presented by Lelan Woodmansee , CAE , former Executive Director . We plan to compile and publish these histories .
As many interested members had scheduling conflicts that prevented them from participating , we would like to reach out and capture all the stories for the record .
