2017 RICHARD SPEAR, MD, MEMORIAL ESSAY CONTEST T he tenth annual Richard Spear, MD, Memorial Essay Contest is here and GLMS wants to know what bugs you about the field of medicine. What things in the modern practice of medicine are driving you nuts? Annoyances, flummoxes, the insanities of health care finance - you name it and we want to hear about it. GLMS welcomes all aspiring physician authors to take part and talk about what has driven you crazy in your own personal health care experiences. In addition to helping you understand it better yourself, there are cash prizes up for grabs. The contest is divided into two entry categories: practicing/retired physicians and in-training physicians/medical students. Both groups will have the same topic “What Drives You Crazy in Health Care?” The prize for practicing and retired physicians is $1,500 cool ones and for physicians-in-training and medical students, a non-paltry $750. That would be at least a couple of plane tickets, future interviewees. Each entry will be considered on excellence in expression, creativity, readability and clarity by the all-volunteer judges. Each entry must be between 800-2,000 words. The essays are due on Monday, March 6, 2017. If it ever does get dark and cold this winter, blowing off steam will help keep you warm. The winning essays will be announced at the annual Presidents' Celebration in May or June and then published in the July 2017 issue of Louisville Medicine. Many of the other outstanding entries will be published in subsequent months as determined by the GLMS Editorial Board. For this contest, all entries must be original, unpublished writing intended solely for publication in Louisville Medicine and pertinent to the themes. Please remember HIPAA guidelines: include NO information that could potentially identify real patients. Please use a separate cover letter with your name, entry category, essay title and contact information as judges are blinded to authors. Send entries and cover letters via email as an attachment to Aaron Burch at [email protected]. Email submissions are highly preferred, but if not possible, send entry by fax to (502) 581-9022 c/o Aaron Burch or by mail (begining February 1) to GLMS, 328 E. Main St., Louisville, KY, 40202.
