THE FUTURE AIN’T WHAT IT USED
TO BE!
W
here did the year go? It seems
just yesterday we were at the
Healing Place Women’s Cam-
pus celebrating my installation as President
of your GLMS. I remember wondering what
the future would bring to me as President
and to you, the members of the Society. The
future then included the possibility of a sale
of the Old Medical School Building by the
GLMS Foundation that would require a
relocation of the GLMS offices. The future
then included upcoming local, state and
national elections and the uncertainty of
the future of Obamacare. The future then
included the requirement of writing month-
ly "From the President" articles, topics for
which I had no earthly idea. Then the future
happened and now it has become the past. over as the President of GLMS. He already
has great plans to move our Society forward.
But as in baseball, the head of the club can
only take the team so far. To be successful on
the field we need coaches and managers and
outfielders and infielders. We need umpires
and sportscasters and, of course, our Society
always needs fans – dues paying fans.
And so, as Yogi Berra said, “The future
ain’t what it used to be.” • Unite physicians regardless of practice
settings to achieve these ends.
Past presidents of this Society spent their
last article recapping the year, reciting all
that was accomplished over the course of
their presidency. I will not do that. There is
still too much work to be done to dwell on
the past. The world is changing. Medicine
is changing. Rather, I will end as I began,
by asking you to please get involved in your
Society. It is time for the best and brightest
minds to step up to the plate and take a
few swings at the ball. It is time for us all
to hit the field. Surely there is something in these four
statements that you can do.
Next month Rob Zaring, MD, will take
But I ask you - please do not sit in the
bleachers. Get out on the field! Remember
our Society’s four prong mission:
• Promote the science, art and profession
of medicine,
• Protect the integrity of the patient-phy-
sician relationship,
• Advocate for the health and well-being
of the community, and
To make the most out of the future you’ve
got to see it coming! So, here is a look into
the future. Plan now to get involved:
On Sunday, May 21st, the President’s
Celebration will be held to install Dr. Rob
Zaring as the GLMS President. Come on out
to show your support! Rob will be there to
sign autographs.
In July and August, the Policy and Ad-
vocacy Team will be meeting. We always
need new members with squirrelly ideas
that somehow become reasonable resolu-
tions for the KMA Annual Meeting. The
KMA Annual Meeting will be held at the
Hyatt Regency in Louisville on August 25-
27. Sign up to be a GLMS Delegate.
On September 25th, the GLMS Foun-
dation will hold its 2017 Scholarship Golf
Tournament. Sign up to play or, if you don’t
play, come on out and volunteer to make it
happen. It’s always fun.
In October, GLMS will once again have its
Wear the White Coat Program. Politicians,
teachers, preachers and the press – all get
a chance to follow a physician around for
a day to see what the life of a physician is
like. They all find what we do fascinating.
Plan to volunteer to be a preceptor so we can
get as many people through this program
as possible.
Any month is a good month to be in-
volved in one of the GLMS committees.
The Editorial Board under Dr. Mary Barry’s
leadership is looking for aspiring writers. If
you like to write, or enjoyed criticizing my
writing, this could be the committee for you.
The Policy and Advocacy Team is warming
up to take a swing at Kentucky’s Tort Reform
Law. We will need some heavy hitters for
this one. Get to know your legislators in
the off season. And there are many more
committees needing your help. You can join
