Nigerian. She’s Nigerian. So they talked, and she invited him to our
African Christian group. I had been a part of that bible study for a
long time. So, he sees me. I don’t see him. And the rest of the story
is history,” she laughed.
The two made a family together and now have five children: Brit-
taney, Stephaney, Tobi, Chioma and Emenike. Both parents have a
love of travel instilled by their own parents, who showed them the
Nigerian countryside. Two years ago, the family took a road trip to
Yellowstone National Park. They also travel at least every other year
back home to Nigeria, and stay active with the African Christian
Fellowship at both the local and national levels.
Dr. Obi hopes to travel for more medical missions as well. In
1998, she attended an educational mission trip to Romania and
found the experience incredibly engaging. “The government in
Romania fell and the new government’s medical care, particularly

in specialty obstetrics and neonatology, was quite simple. So, one of
my colleagues was going to be a part of the project and I wanted to
go. We visited four hospitals, training physicians and nurses there
on how to care for premature babies. That was my first exposure
to care not being up to par. Now my goal is to do more medical
missions, either Christian or education based. I always like to give
help to people who need it.”
From Baltimore to Nigeria to Indianapolis and Chicago, it was
good fortune for Louisville that a caring neonatal doctor like Dr.
Olugbemisola Obi would build a career and a family here.
