The exquisite spice has been likened to fairy dust or gold leaf flakes. Pat Willard’s prose is enchanting, charming and sumptuous and is punctuated with lessons in history of the 4,000 years of journeys of saffron from the Sumerian empire in between the rivers Tigris and Euphrates; from the island domain of Crete; through Persia, Kashmir, Italy, Spain and Southern France and England. Throughout the book, she provides contemporary and ancient recipes which incorporate saffron including a deliciously fragrant Andalusian chicken dish, a Saffron Crème Brulee Pie recipe and the Spanish Paella. One entire chapter narrates her own travels to Consuegra, a small town of windmills and saffron fields in the municipality of Toledo, Spain, where an annual “Saffron Festival” (the Fiesta de la Rosa del Azafran) is held. The recipe for he r Saffron Crème Brulee comes from the festival. A very informative guide to purchasing and using saffron is provided along with a cadre of recipes for saffron lobster, saffron consommé, saffron tea, saffron custard and saffron lemon pound cake. The Dr. Ephraim McDowell House is located in Danville, Kentucky. In 1809, Dr. McDowell performed surgery on Jane Crawford in his house without anesthetic, and removed a 22 1/2-pound ovarian tumor. She lived 32 years longer. On April 29, the Alliance partnered with the Zonta Club of Louisville for tickets on “Millionaires Row.” Everyone cheered and handicapped, and admired the beauty of all the wonderful hats the ladies wore.
