W
hen Lori Brent met Dr. Melissa Currie, she, her husband,
John, and their son, Jake, almost 4-months-old, were at Kosair Children’s Hospital where the infant had arrived with a
broken arm and leg. Abuse at the home of a babysitter was suspected.
Currie told the Brent’s her pediatric forensic medicine team had confirmed the babysitter had a history of abuse complaints. The perpetrator
was prosecuted and moved away from the area, and Jake is now a happy,
healthy 7-year-old. Brent says Currie leads the charge in Kentucky to
prevent and raise awareness of child abuse. “This can happen to anybody,”
she says. “How come nobody talks about it?”
Currie, Medical Director and Chief of Kosair Charities Division of
Pediatric Forensic Medicine at U of L, is doing something about that.
