Louisville Medicine remains very popular, while our digital communications fit the communication style of many early career physicians and other physicians who prefer those delivery methods. GLMS also offers an effective set of practice management support services, and a valued referral service. patient advocacy A primary feature of our patient advocacy has been our Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee. Patient protection initiatives are regularly developed by GLMS and brought to hospitals and governmental agencies at all levels. Over the past several years, our initiative to cover the uninsured has taken many forms, which have served the most compelling needs of patients and their communities in this era. GLMS has recently become a strong advocate for establishing Surgery On Sunday, a volunteer free surgery program, which now fills in missing pieces for those still uninsured. Also, patient concerns are effectively addressed by our Grievance Committee, Judicial Council and Peer-Review activities. Health and wellness has been consistently promoted by the Vital Signs public education publication, which is distributed to patients electronically. 22 LOUISVILLE MEDICINE community service An enduring legacy of Lelan’s tenure has been preservation of The Old Medical School Building and its unique features, a prominent symbol of Louisville’s interest in its history through architectural preservation. In recent years, the Pulse of Surgery Program was developed in conjunction with the Kentucky Science Center and this program has become an acclaimed education tool for middle and high school students across the state. Our smoke-free Louisville initiatives not only have benefited individuals, but also have brought a great improvement in quality of the community environment. Another community service is our Transitions of Care project, which has vastly benefited many patients and made life much easier on medical personnel. medical humanitarianism Medical humanitarian activities of GLMS have given spectacular demonstrations of medical compassion to our community, state and beyond. The GLMS Foundation has grown and addressed a large number of needs, as exemplified by our annual medical mission immersion trip to Nicaragua.
