members for the success that teamwork had brought them. Also at
the event, Louisville Medicine Editor Mary G. Barry announced the
winners of the annual Richard Spear, MD, Memorial Essay Contest.
The Muhammad Ali Center provided an excellent locale for the
event with guests able to visit the numerous exhibits celebrating one
of Louisville’s heroes, Muhammad Ali, and look out on the Ohio
River from the ceremony’s location on the top floor. Dr. Couch
partly decided on the location due to the fight facing Louisville
physicians each day.
Nina Vasavada, MD, won in the practicing physician category for
her essay, “The Unexpected in Front of Us.” Resident Joseph Bales,
MD, (could not attend) and medical student Sarah Khayat tied in
the in-training/student category for their essays, “The Machine in
All of Us” and “Hold the Phone,” respectively. All three essays can
be found in this edition of Louisville Medicine. Runners-up will be
published in the coming months. For more coverage of the 2015
