school in Charleston . He has long wanted to create a seafood restaurant here on the river and cites the proximity of the shipping hub as a means of taking full advantage of his seafood purveyors in Hawaii and Florida . I assume that this will be an important business link in maintaining the success of his Raw Bar .
The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week . Menu prices range from $ 8 to $ 22 for lunch and $ 8 to $ 35 for dinner . The one exception I noted on our menu was an appetizer described as a tower of fresh lump crab meat ( 1lb .) for $ 70 . There is also an item on the Raw Bar menu - The River Tower - which is a mix of crab , lobster , mussels and oysters priced at $ 60 and intended for two persons . When I reviewed the lunch and dinner menus later I noticed that the variety of dishes is about the same . There are significantly fewer Po Boys and sandwiches on the dinner menu as compared with the lunch menu , but I think this is to be expected .
During our time in the restaurant we noticed construction people coming and going outside and when we left the building we saw that half is devoted to a restaurant and bar named Levee . This is also a Varanese venture which opened recently . It is different from River House and features small plates , a variety of frozen cocktails which Chef Varanese has long wanted to try in Louisville , and provides live entertainment in the evening at a specially designed indoor / outdoor bar .
On the river side of the building there is a lovely stone patio ( think wedding photos ). There is easy access to a grassy area - shared with the Kingfish - extending right down to the water ’ s edge . There is also a play area for children . This whole complex is going to be bustling in the summer months and thinking of that I wonder if parking will be adequate for all the guests . Clearly there is ample space on the grassy areas in front of the Water Tower and it is an easy walk over to the restaurants , but I don ’ t know if that is the anticipated arrangement .
This portends to be a great addition to our neighborhood dining scene and I hope residents and restaurant guests will have a long and mutually agreeable co-existence . Dr . Amin is a retired diagnostic radiologist .
