many times I’ve been up at small restaurants and there’s a
little piano in the corner. I’ll ask if I can play and as soon
as I do, it brightens up the room. Music builds bridges.”
Often times, music can build those bridges in unexpected
places. Dr. Thompson met his wife, Dana Jackson, through
the drummer in one of his bands.
“She came in talking all kinds of trash, saying she was
going to beat me in basketball. She has no basketball skills.
I don’t know what she was thinking,” he laughed. “But, she’s
one of the smartest people I know. She’s an Annie E. Casey
Fellow, which in the world of social change is a really big
deal. She’s such a heavyweight that a lot of places we go,
people call me Mr. Jackson.”
bunch of excuses but they finally talked me into it. When I got there
and saw them playing, my mouth dropped. They were unreal. Some
years later, I went and spent a week in South Carolina at his bass
camp, and that was an amazing experience as well.”
These days, Dr. Thompson plays electric bass in the Unlimited
Show Band with his sister LeRonda on keys. The seven member
group has played countless shows around Louisville and had their
own tent at the Kentucky State Fair last year. They also opened for
En Vogue and Morris Day & the Time.
“When you look out and see 14,000 people nodding to what

Dr. Thompson said.
“There’s so much you can do with music. I can’t tell you how

They have three children, twin boys, Nigel and Nuri, who
just started college, and their younger brother Jaylen, who’s
11. All three have their own musical styles and interest. Nigel
plays keys, Nuri plays saxophone and just started guitar, and
Jaylen is picking up piano.
“The boys are doing great. The college kids are killing it. I kind
of feel bad for Jaylen. Now that they’re in college, all my fussing
only has one target. So I try to remember that and back off from
time to time,” he laughed.
In his free time, Dr. Thompson loves to play golf and watch the
Louisville Cardinals play. He still plays music with his sister at the
Third Central United Christian Church and just celebrated his 50th
birthday. While he admits to slowing down a little bit and letting
others set up the band’s equipment, Dr. Thompson still lives by the
mantra, “You’re as tired as you think you are.”
