(continued from page 19) about his criticism of the FDA in the way it regulates research and how it approves cancer treatments: too timid for his taste, and often evaluated by reviewers not trained in cancer research, who are more rewarded for caution than for courage. He is equally scornful about the many naysayers predicting that the war against cancer has been lost. He points out the continuing drop in cancer mortality since 1990; that for every 20 percent drop in cancer deaths the economy gains $10 trillion. He enthusiastically explains our new understanding of the hallmarks of cancer. The last part of the book describes the recent astonishing breakthroughs targeting gene mutations and activating the immune system to fight cancer, but DeVita worries that “we get bogged down by our system” and not advance as fast as we could. Dr. DeVita at 79, himself a survivor of aggressive prostate cancer, expresses his fighting spirit with so much optimism, so certain of mankind’s inevitable success in the war against cancer, that reading his book is as uplifting as it is informative. Dr. Kloecker is an associate professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology. He is director of the Hematology-Medical Oncology Fellowship Program. “I know that I’m in the right place” The Family Health Centers are dedicated to providing excellent primary and preventive health care to all, regardless of ability to pay for these services.
