DECEMBER JANUARY 4th Annual Scholarship Golf Outing funded four U of L medical students who received $5,000 in scholarships each. Linda Gleis, MD, Chair of the Scholarship Committee said, “These scholarship awards make a huge difference in their lives and also show support of the community towards their efforts and hopefully instill the same giving spirit as they become practicing physicians.” On Sept. 23, 2014, more than 70 physicians and sponsors attended the event to raise money and encourage young adults to continue the pursuit of medicine. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the medical community and the community at large to come together for something great, supporting our physicians of the future,” said GLMS Foundation Medical Missions Committee Chair Denise Puthuff, MD. OUR DOCTORS EDUCATED THE COMMUNITY While physicians are tasked every day with improving the health of their patients, GLMS members have gone above and beyond once again this year to give local leaders the opportunity to experience life as a physician, and to share the big picture with their communities. One of GLMS’s most acclaimed events is the annual Wear the White Coat program in which community leaders are paired with Louisville physicians to shadow for a day. The fourth annual WWC event kicked of October 15, 2014, where 24 physicians met their pairings at the Kentucky Science Center. Volunteer participants including local business leaders, city representatives and journalists 24 LOUISVILLE MEDICINE all took part, and when the pairs reconvened, the lucky participants expressed sincere gratitude for being able to wear the white coat even just for a day. “The empathy, the care, the ability to connect with patients in a minute, I don’t know how Dr. (Tina) Yuan does that,” said Scott Williamson, PhD, Professor at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. “Whatever the forces are that take Tina’s time away from patients, they’re criminal.” The GLMS Bioethics Committee, chaired by Morris Weiss, MD, also made headway in community health by visiting public events and signing residents up for living wills. Committee member Ed Wunsch, EdD, visited the “Men’s Health: A Family Affair” event at the African-American Heritage Center and gave out information to families about the importance of planning for when family members cannot make decisions for themselves. Several fundraising 5K’s were held in relation to the health care community. Both The Healing Place and Doctors & Lawyers for Kids saw great turnout at their 5K events from physicians and Louisville residents alike. The GLMS continues to support both of these organizations and the wonderful work they do. The GLMS Foundation works throughout the year to improve health care in disadvantaged areas locally, regionally and internationally. Close to home, the Foundation collaborates with numerous charitable partners including Supplies Over Seas, the Family Community Clinic and many more.
