Unite physicians regardless of practice setting to achieve these ends to connect with each other and discuss what’s on their minds. On Mission: • To Unite physicians regardless of practice setting to achieve these ends On June 28, at the University of Louisville’s orientation for incoming residents, scores of new GLMS members were recruited. GLMS President, James Patrick Murphy, MD, MMM, spoke to the group about the value of GLMS membership, stressing the opportunities for leadership development, committee involvement and inclusion in the GLMS Annual Pictorial Roster and Mobile App. James Patrick Murphy, MD, MMM: During his term as President of GLMS, Dr. Murphy seems to have been everywhere at once: encouraging tomorrow’s physicians at the White Coat Ceremony with an original poem, giving the welcoming remarks at the KMA Annual Meeting, creating MSPS’s first comprehensive in-depth CME course (OPIOID) and raising money for area children at Ramble by the River. The list goes on. Getting the credit as our first president to be a social media guru, Dr. Murphy has been a great unifier during his term, constantly reminding us that, together, we can accomplish our goals. Meeting residents as they embark on this stage of their journey helps them to feel connected to the larger community of professionals. It’s also a great opportunity for GLMS members to encourage and mentor. With so many specialties, employers and pet issues, getting physicians to move in one direction can be a daunting task. At first glance, it may appear that the differences are overwhelmingly complex, but when you get right down to it, there is more uniting physicians than separating them. GLMS is here to unite and organize physicians around the ties that bind, and in today’s rapidly changing world, being united is more important than ever. One of the good things about rapid change is the ease with which people can communicate and share information. In order to facilitate better communication, GLMS developed two digital assets designed to help physicians communicate with one another: • GLMS Doctor’s Lounge: This private blog, launched in June, is designed to be a place for physicians and medical students GLMS Goes to Washington GLMS Video Channel: GLMS produces and hosts numerous events and meetings throughout the year, designed to educate physicians on vital issues. Sometimes, it’s impossible for everyone who needs to be at a meeting to attend, and it is to that end that GLMS created a video channel for members, where videotaped events can be archived and easily accessed by members at their convenience. The White Coat Ceremony is an important tradition on the GLMS calendar. On July 28, 142 incoming medical students from the class of 2017 activated their GLMS memberships and donned their first white coats, a gift from GLMS. By embracing these men and women who are embarking on the long journey to becoming practicing physicians, GLMS embraces its mission of uniting not just the dues paying professional, but the future of the profession itself. By embracing students at the onset of the medical school experience, GLMS members can influence students in how they approach medicine, which specialties may be best suited for them and how they conduct themselves. The Policy and Advocacy Team hosted a meeting on August 29 focused on “issues that involve all of us,” and included state and local specialty societies. GLMS President James Patrick Murphy, MD, MMM, spoke at the forum, reminding attendees that “when (continued on page 26) Speciality Speed Networking ACA PostImplementation Town Hall Doctors’ Day March 2014 May 2014 25
