LOUISVILLE’S MEDICAL LEGACY
OF EXCELLENCE

ith the support of generations of
physicians, the Greater Louisville
Medical Society Foundation has
been an integral part of Louisville medicine
since 1958. GLMS is proud to introduce a
comprehensive campaign aimed at ensuring
the Foundation’s ability to continue building
that legacy of support.
The GLMS Foundation’s three core mission areas are: (1) Medical
Missions; (2) Medical Student Scholarships; and (3) Preservation
of the Old Medical School. The Foundation has evolved over the
past 55 years to meet the challenge of providing better health care
in our community and abroad.
To demonstrate our steadfast commitment of service to our
community, the GLMS Foundation has entered into a $10 million Comprehensive Campaign to grow and secure our three
initiatives into perpetuity.
MEDICAL MISSIONS: Local, Regional & International:
Through collaboration with local organizations, we can reduce the
burden of poverty and disadvantage, hoping to break generational
cycles of poor nutrition and insufficient access to health care in
communities.
If local physicians and families combine our efforts through our
Medical Missions Initiative, we will have a far greater impact. In
addition, combining our efforts with organizations and medical
providers on-site, we can improve health care in underserved or
disadvantaged areas (state, regional and international) and develop
and implement strategies to ameliorate the challenges faced in
health care disparity.
MEDICAL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS: Our Scholarship
Initiative will enable us to continue to support bright and determined medical students in the pursuit of medicine. Today’s cost of
a 4 year in-state medical education tuition is a staggering $147,000,
not including fees, books, supplies and living expenses. Support of
medical student scholarships ensures that our community is prepared to address changes in health care access, capacity, training
and education. We are strongly committed to developing a pipeline
of innovative and devoted physicians to continue the practice of
medicine.
Over the past three years we have awarded a total of $60,000 to
very worthy UofL medical students from our signature event, the
GLMS Foundation Scholarship Golf Outing. (Join us for the fourth
annual golf outing on September 22, 2014.)
Current physicians have the opportunity to directly help today’s
young medical students attain their ultimate goal of becoming
a physician by designating a pledge to the “Scholarship Fund.”
Together we can ensure that our Louisville medical community
continues its legacy of excellence.
OLD MEDICAL SCHOOL PRESERVATION: This Romanesque building with the red doors at First & Chestnut is where some
of the world’s most brilliant and empathetic physicians, surgeons
and medical mentors trace their lineage: the first real home of the
University of Louisville School of Medicine. From within these walls,
students and teachers of the Old Medical School forever changed
the course of medical history and progress in our community.
The Old Medical School Building stands as a proud reminder of
those accomplishments. Having been preserved, the red doors still
open into the beautifully welcoming foyer, featuring tile floors and
artwork created by physicians and their families. The Old Medical
School is an irreplaceable piece of medical history where scores of
physicians began their journeys.
Today it is a place where physicians and health community leaders
still gather to respond to the current challenges of the medical community. Your designated gift to OMS Preservation is needed as we
continue to focus on the preservation of this building and preserve
its history and usefulness in our medical community.
