Richard I. Haddy, MD (1950-2013)
W
e are honored to commemorate
Dr. Richard Haddy—husband,
father, brother, son, teacher, researcher, physician.
Richard Ian Haddy was born January 8,
1950 at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester,
Minnesota. He grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota;
Arlington Heights and Mt. Prospect, Illinois;
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and E. Lansing,
Michigan with a loving family dedicated to
medical research. His father, Francis Haddy,
is a cardiac researcher and his mother, Theresa
Haddy, a pediatrician. As the grandson of a
small-town doctor, he was a third-generation
physician on his mother’s side. He was the
oldest of three children, preceding his sisters
Carol and Alice. He attended Classen High
School in Oklahoma City and E. Lansing High
School in E. Lansing.
After graduating from St. Olaf College with
a degree in chemistry and biology, he went on
to earn a medical degree from Michigan State
University. There, he met his wife, Cheryl,
who he married in 1976. Following a family
practice residency at University of Iowa, he
added a fellowship in infectious diseases. His
medical career spanned thirty seven years, including two years in practice in Grand Ledge,
Michigan and academic positions in Flint,
Michigan; University of Florida; Wright State
University; and University of Louisville,
