A wise man once told me, “Your life should be about influencing others in a positive way, to make a difference for good. It’s not about academic or monetary accomplishments, but how you live your life and treat others.” This wise man, my own father, was influenced by his medical mentors and has subsequently influenced me. When talking to other physicians about their medical mentors, it was never the wealthiest or the most medaled physician who made the cut. Rather, the medical mentors who are most remembered are the ones who influenced more than academic and clinical knowledge.
