INTRODUCTION As a building which provides extensive views, The Square Tower is a prominent building, standing on the sea front of Portsmouth; this project encourages its use as day to day so many people pass and observe the Solent around this building and will therefore provide a greater understanding of what surrounds the buildings as well as its significance. This adaptation of the Square Tower will encourage usage by the public, acting as an information point with introductions to each aspect of the observatory, illustrating the narrative in an engaging way as well as exposing the history of the Square Tower. As a Grade 1 Listed building, it is important that all changes made are in respect to the significance of the building’s history as well as its structure which will be complimented by the instalment of new materials against the old. The adaptation of the Square Tower will help to support this by encouraging use by the community to observe and explore the local area, linking attractions along the seafront with the Historic Dockyards. 2
