DESIGN 22 As the concept developed, the interventions have become more refined, narrating the stories in a more subtle way and therefore communicate the information more clearly and presented more cohesively. The Square Tower is not overwhelmed with information because of how small the areas are; its function as a museum is to engage with learning about Portsmouth’s maritime history and hopefully encourage visitors to continue to explore this subject at the different attractions also available in Portsmouth. There has been an emphasis on the existing materials to help communicate its history and significance, it is exposed in certain areas whilst being concealed in others by new materials. The relationship between the new and old materials is an integral part of the design, keeping time in mind by considering how the new materials will age themselves, becoming a new layer of the Square Tower’s history for its foreseeable use.
