LOS ANGELES FIRM INC MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2015 Andy Silvers How important is it to focus on the details of a single images to produce quality material? I think in any creative art form attention to detail is very important. The sort of details the artist pays attention too affects the way their image is perceived. In my own work there is plenty of thought given to how I want the image to look before I even start to shoot. The details of lighting, the color palette, wardrobe, styling. For the style of photography I do, there isn’t much being left to chance. I think the shots through as much as possible. In your professional opinion what is missing from the world of images that actually make a difference? I see far too much sameness of imagery and copying of styles. Like anything else, photography will follow certain trends. Out of 100 photographers, you’ll see what seems like 90% follow a given trend, then the other 10% will do their own thing. It’s like people that learn to play an instrument and start a band to only do cover songs. What made you want to become a photographer?  I’ve had a camera since I was a teenager, but my background is in art and graphics design. Photography has mostly always been hobby, especially in film days when cost of film, developing and prints sort of sucked the fun out of it. When digital SLR’s became affordable then the hobby became more of a passional. The digital format worked well for me and as a artist, it was a medium that made sense for me. My main occupation is still graphic design. I’m a photographer in the sense that it’s my chosen medium of personal expression. I do shoot freelance and get publication work outside of being a designer, but mostly I shoot a good amount of my images for myself and personal enjoyment. What do you focus on mostly? I shoot a lot of different things but my primary interest and focus is on portraiture, beauty and editorial/character style portraits. Those are usually the sort of shots/shoots I enjoy most. I just get tired and bored doing too much of the same too often so I try to mix up what I shoot.
