With storylines intertwining between characters and centuries , understanding the plot of the Assassin ’ s Creed franchise before the new movie is released can be a difficult mission . We are here to help you , but keep in mind : Nothing is true , everything is permitted .
( SPOILERS !) Desmond Miles is the descendent of multiple lines of ancient Assassins . Assassins are the progeny of , no joke , another race known as the First Civilization ( or Precursors or Isu ), who created humans as servants . Adam and Eve , the ancestors of those with the bloodline to become Assassins , were believed to be hybrids between humans and the people of the First Civilization , and were therefore the first humans able to resist the mind control techniques of the First Civilization . Oh , I ’ m sorry , you thought this franchise was about jumping into hay from tall buildings ? You thought wrong .
This is the important part about the First Civilization : they were almost completely annihilated by a catastrophic solar flare . Various Isu scientists , including two called Minerva and Juno ( we ’ ll talk about them later ) tried to find ways to prevent it , but ultimately everything failed and very few people , human or Isu , survived .
So Desmond , with his mixed bloodlines , has access to the memories of his ancestors via a machine known as the Animus , created by the modern day Templar Order under the front of Abstergo Industries . Wait , I should back up : The Templars and the Assassins are mortal enemies . The Templars , descendents of Cain , the murderous son of Adam and Eve , believe that the only way to ensure the survival of humanity is to control the actions of individuals for the good of society as a whole . This is the exact opposite of what the Assassins believe , since they value personal freedom … except
