Working carers
If you are juggling work with caring for family or
friends, you are not alone – there are three million
working carers in the UK.
There are rights you have in work
which might help you to juggle
work and care (see pages 30–31).
As well as these statutory rights,
you may also have additional
contractual rights.
In addition to your rights at work,
there might be other ways to make
juggling work and care easier, such
as accessing relevant support at
work (see page 32), or outside of
your employment.
If you are struggling to juggle work
and care and are thinking of leaving
work it is important to consider
the full implications it could have
on your income, quality of life and
future pension entitlements.
Looking after someone
You could think about whether
there is anything you can do to
make it easier to juggle work and
care such as getting help and
support (see pages 10–19), seeing
whether there are any rights you
have at work which could help your
caring role (see pages 30–31), and
seeing if there is any additional
support available which could help
(see page 32).
You could also get a benefit check
from the Carers UK Adviceline
to find out what your financial
situation would look like if you were
to leave work or reduce your hours
(see page 21).
