To Hold Bullying & Cyberbullying Workshop

Jewish Family & Children's Services of Long Beach/West Orange County is partnering with the Anti-Defamation League and the Alpert Jewish Community Center to present a workshop for adult family members to increase their awareness about bullying and cyberbullying and to provide these family members with strategies to prevent and intervene in incidents of bullying. “Understanding Bullying and Cyberbullying: What Your Kids Wish You Knew!”, will be held on Wednesday, October 28 from 6pm to 7:30pm at the Alpert JCC, 3801 E. Willow St. in Long Beach.

For the current generation of youth, electronic communications such as e-mailing, texting, and using social media are a vital means of self-expression and a central focus of their social lives. There are increasing incidences of these media being used to bully children and adolescents, and most youth who are targeted do not notify an adult. Studies of students ages 12 to 18 reveal that 28% report being bullied at school, and 24% report being cyberbullied at some point in their young lives.

This seminar will serve to increase understanding and awareness of bullying and cyberbullying and will demonstrate the ways in which cyberbullying is distinct from bullying, and how it occurs. Families will leave with tips to prevent and respond to both forms of bullying, and they will also understand the legal and ethical responsibilities of schools to respond to bullying that occurs on and off campus.

The event is open to the public and is free of charge. Reservations are suggested to ensure adequate seating and can be made by calling (562) 335-2443.
