The World Jewish Congress joined with the People’s Republic of China in a celebratory event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Shanghai Ghetto and the end of World War II in China.

If you will remember, the ghetto was “home” for over 23,000 Jewish refugees in Japanese occupied Shanghai, refugees who fled Germany and Poland after Krystallnacht and found “safe haven” there despite the fact that Japan was part of the Axis powers. (Remember, too, refugees couldn’t get into the U.S. either, due to our restrictive immigration laws and biased State Department.) It’s a fascinating story and one that a member of our community, Revan “Dick” Komaroff , now deceased, would have vividly remembered. The event, chaired by Ambassador Ronald.S. Lauder, will welcome 100 Jewish representatives from Jewish communities around the world, as well as China and the survivors. Since 1991, the WJC has been encouraging relations between China and Israel to accomplish full diplomatic relations.
