In July, Temple Israel welcomed Cantor Sara Hass to their congregation. Recently ordained from HUC-JIR, Cantor Haas grew up in the Los Angeles area. She has worked for the Professional Leaders Project in Los Angeles – a small Jewish non-profit catering to young adults in their 20s and 30s, as well as for the Legal and Entertainment divisions of the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles.

Cantor Hass has served as a song leader and tefillah coordinator at several URJ camps, including URJ Jacobs Camp in Mississippi, URJ Eisner Camp, and Camp Newman/Swig in Santa Rosa, CA. Sara spent fourteen summers at Camp Newman/Swig, where she first discovered her love for Jewish music.

While Temple Israel is Cantor Hass's first position since being ordained, she was a cantorial intern at Temple Beth David in Cheshire, CT, Temple Rodef Shalom in Fall's Church, VA, Congregation Shma Koleinu in Houston, TX, and Beth El Temple Center in Belmont, MA.

Commenting on Cantor Hass's arrival at Temple Israel, Rabbi Steven Moskowitz said, “We are thrilled to have Cantor Hass join us as Temple Israel’s first full-time ordained cantor. She has embraced with great enthusiasm her role in our community as a teacher of Torah in its fullest sense: a leader of prayer services, a pastoral presence, and a teacher of the wisdom of Torah.”
