While the Middle East continues to be caught up in violence and never-ending hatred of Americans, there is a small oasis where Israel and Gaza are in a cautious ceasefire. Even trying to find some good news in Europe is not an easy task. But we’ll try:

The best news so far from Europe is the strong denouncement of anti-Semitism by France’s prime minister, Manuel Valls, and the dismissal of Hungary’s virulent ambassador to Rome, Peter Szentmihalyi Szabo. Szabo, according to World Jewish Congress information, once said “Jews [are] agents of Satan, greedy, envious, evil and ugly.” Interestingly, why he was appointed ambassador in the first place is anyone’s guess,

since he does not speak Italian and has little knowledge of foreign affairs. And in Australia, it was reported that 10,000 or more people stood up for Israel in the streets of Sydney during a “Rally for Israel,” an event held around the world. Rallies were seen in New York as well as in Washington, D.C., attracting thousands.

But reports from the Simon Wiesenthal Center remind us that “in Europe today, a yarmulke, even in broad daylight, could invite attacks in the heart of Paris, London and Amsterdam.” The report adds that Jews there are now asking themselves, what happens now? Where will they go? The future, it says, doesn’t look promising, with 58 million Moslems expected to be living in Europe “by the year 2030 and 5.5 Moslems living in England alone” — according to the latest Pew Report.

Always ready: Good and Welfare

Sierra Leone will soon have the benefit of medical professionals from IsraAID, an Israeli non-governmental relief organization, to help in the combating of the dread Ebola virus that has already claimed the lives of thousands of people in Sierra Leone and Liberia. The Jewish volunteers will offer psychological support training to the local social workers and work with local governments and health providers to enhance their service skills and raise awareness of the importance of hygiene and health to combat the spread of the deadly virus.
