Long Beach Jewish Life November 2016 | Page 25

Fall is in the air, and that means that now that we're past the High Holy Days, we can look forward to this year's iteration of the Long Beach Jewish Film Festival. Returning to its home at the Alpert JCC, with its opening night set for November 9, this year's festival offers up five films worthy of your viewing.

The festival's opening night kicks off with a screening of Dough, a warmhearted and humorous story about overcoming prejudice and finding redemption in unexpected places. Curmudgeonly widower Nat Dayan (Jonathan Pryce) clings to his way of life as a Kosher bakery shop owner in London’s East End. Understaffed, Nat reluctantly enlists the help of teenager Ayyash (Jerome Holder), who has a secret side gig selling marijuana to help his immigrant mother make ends meet. When Ayyash drops his stash into the mixing dough, the challah starts flying off the shelves and an unlikely friendship forms between the old Jewish baker and his young Muslim apprentice.
